Hoi!
Dus wat was nu eigenlijk onze "Walls painted on the green"-opdracht?
We painted Taiwan Red (and blue, orange, purple,... =D )
Yesterday we received our first assignment described as "walls painted on the green". Because of this we didn't actually know what would be expected of us but took the MRT to Wenzhou all enthousiastic and hoping for the best. Waiting for us was this cute girl (chinese girl in the picture) called "Way". After a few minutes Asuka also arrived (older guy with white T-shirt). He is the head of the community development department of Wenzhou. Our project is designed to support his organization and so help with the further development of the community.
Maybe you could do with a little more information about our project. Well... We will attend several events of this above mentioned organization so we can learn more about the local community of Wenzhou. During our participation we'll also try to beautify the environment and to increase the community feeling amongst the locals. Besides these activities we've also been assigned a guide/translator who will accompany us in discovering the neighborhood. This will allow us to askthe locals some questions so we can really understand how it feels to live in Wenzhou. Goal of the project is to use this information to develop some promotional and communication materials. This means writing our blog, making a touristmap, making an info-brochure, ... that can be used to educate foreign students on the local culture.
Reason is that close to the Wenzhou area, there's a big university that hosts more than a couple of foreign students every year. This can (and has in the past) led to some small culture clashes because students don't really have a good understanding of the neighborhood and the local culture. Our information can improve this. By reading our materials, foreign students can better understand the locals and adapt their behaviour more acurately. At the end of our project we'll also organize an event where we'll introduce our own culture (and foreign and western culture in general) to the citizens of Wenzhou. This will also help them to better understand us. We hope to facilitate cultural exchange between us and them.
So... What happened with "painting the walls on the green"? We arrived at this neglected lot of land. It was our job to transform it into this better looking area where kids could play. Later they will also plant a herb garden and install a permaculture at the small piece of land. We had the cool task to paint the brick walls into a bunch of bright colors and to add our own flair to it as you can see on all the pictures!
