Movies and Meetings

Monday was a free day and the perfect day for us to go out and do something fun because most people are at work so Taipei seems less crowded. It was predicted that it would be a scorching hot day, around 34 degrees, so we did something we had been looking forward to for a couple of days. We went to the movies! While trying to find the best place to go to on the internet, we came across this page:

We were sold immediately! Monday morning we woke up on time and took the MRT to Sun-Yat-Sen Memorial Hall Station. When we got there it took us a long time to figure out how to exactly walk but after the kindness of some strangers and 20 minutes of walking we finally made it, just in time for the first movie on our list: Oblivion. We bought two tickets for 280NTD (7,27€ !!!) and found ourselves a seat in the theatre. We won't spoil the movie or give a whole review here. Let's just say we enjoyed our time in a well airconditioned room!

The movie finished around 11u30AM and our stomachs started to rumble a little. So we went to the front door, got a stamp on our arm and went out to the 7-eleven for some drinks and coockies to eat during our next movie. Right across from the theatre we also bought some dumplings for lunch. On the second floor we finished our meal and were ready for the next movie: The Call with Halle Berry. After a five minute break we were ready for next and final movie of the day: Fire with fire. We couldn't get over the fact that it was so cheap and you could really watch as many movies as you liked during that day. What's even more, you could bring as much food and drinks in as you liked. We had a splendid afternoon. We should have this in Belgium!

After the movie theater we slowly made our way to Zhong Xiao Fuxing MRT station, SOGO Shopping Mall. We had made an arrangement to meet another Belgian there, the brother of a collegue of our mom. He is married to a Taiwanese and they came to visit her family here. We had never met them before so we didn't know what to expect but we had the best time ever. Danny and Penny are extremely nice people and we had a lovely time talking with them and getting to know each other better. They also have a 6 year old daughter which is the cutest thing you've ever seen. She is so nice and bubbly and we hope to see this family again once we get back in Belgium. Films en Ontmoetingen

Maandag was een vrije dag en de perfecte dag voor ons om iets leuks te gaan doen in Taipei. De meeste mensen zijn namelijk aan het werk en het is dus niet zo druk als tijdens de weekends. Omdat men voorspeld had dat het een verschrikkelijk hete dag zou worden 34 graden, besloten we iets te gaan doen waar we al enkele dagen naar uitkeken. We zouden naar de film gaan! Terwijl we online op zoek gingen naar de beste cinema, kwamen we de volgende website tegen:

We waren onmiddellijk verkocht! Maandag ochtend stonden we op tijd op namen de metro naar Sun-Yat-Sen Memorial Hall Station. Toen we daar aankwamen duurde het een hele tijd voor de hadden uitgespit hoe we daar juist moesten geraken. Na 20 minuten doorstappen en de behulpzaamheid van enkele voorbijgangers, kwamen we net op tijd aan om de eerste film nog mee te pikken: Oblivion. We kochten twee ticketjes voor 280NTD (7,27€!!!) en vonden onszelf een plaatsje in de zaal. We gaan hier geen hele review van de film doen of het einde verklappen. Het volstaat om te zeggen dat we ons amuseerden in de koele filmzaal.

De film eindigde rond 11u30 en onze buikjes begonnen al wat te knorren. Daarom gingen we terug naar de ingang waar we een stempel op onze arm kregen. In de 7-eleven gingen we wat te drinken halen en enkele snack voor tijdens de film. Recht tegenover de cinema kochten we ook een portie dumplings die we rustig opaten op het eerste verdiep van het cinema complex, voor de tweede film zou beginnen. We keken The Call met Halle Berry in de hoofdrol. Na een korte pauze namen we voor een volgende en laatste keer plaats in de zaal om Fire with Fire te zien. De hele tijd bleven weons maar verbazen dat we zo veel films konden zien (de hele dag mag je kijken) voor zo weinig geld. Wat nog meer is, je mag zelfs je eigen eten en drinken meebrengen in de zaal en dit is compleet normaal. Dit moeten we in België ook hebben! 

Na de film wandelden we rustig terug naar het MRT station en namen we de metro naar ZhongXiao Fuxing Station, SOGO Shopping Mall. We hadden daar afgesproken met een andere Belg, een broer van een collega van onze moeder. Hij is getrouwd met een Taiwanese en ze komen daarom af en toe op bezoek bij haar familie. We hadden hun nog nooit ontmoet en wisten dus ook niet waar we ons aan moesten verwachten. Danny en Penny zijn twee geweldige mensen en we hadden een zalige avond met lekker eten en interessante babbels. Ze hebben samen ook een 6-jarige dochter die het schattigste kindje is dat je ooit hebt gezien.  Ze is zo lief en levendig en we hopen dan ook deze familie terug te zien in België. Danny, Penny & Evy, indien jullie dit lezen: Bedankt voor de geweldige avond en we hopen jullie snel nog eens te zien!

Reisje naar het noorden

Zaterdag zijn we een trip aan de noordkust van Taipei gaan doen. Het principe was dat je de MRT naar Tamsui neemt en daar kan je een busje nemen dat aan alle haltes van de tour stopt. Je kan afstappen, opstappen en terug afstappen zo veel keer je maar wilt en dit voor maar 100 NTD (dit is ongeveer 2,5 euro) voor de hele dag. We vertrokken dus om 7u en waren om 7u45 in Tamsui. Daar namen we de eerste bus om 8u.

 

De eerste halte waar we zijn afgestapt was aan het 'white sand beach'. Het was nog maar 8u40 maar al heel warm. Eens aangekomen leek het wel paradijs op aarde. Het zand was wel niet zo wit als verwacht maar al bij al een mooie locatie om eens het water in te duiken en te genieten van wat zon. Zonder veel aarzelen liepen we de trappen af, zochten een plaatsje voor onze handdoek en liepen we de zee in. Spijtig genoeg mochten we niet echt diep in de zee, dus echt zwemmen zat er niet in. Met spijt in het hart zijn we om 11u terug vertrokken maar zijn zeker van plan om nog eens terug te gaan om een hele dag te genieten van zon, zee en strand...

 

 De tweede halte waar we zijn afgestapt was een soort wedding piazza, bekend om trouwfoto's te laten maken. Het is prachtig met allemaal witte muren en bogen. Hier hebben we wat foto's gemaakt en genoten van het mooie uitzicht. Daarna hebben we de overvolle bus genomen naar de derde halte.

 

 De derde halte was een grote begraafplaats. Er lag een bekende zangeres begraven en je kon voortdurend haar muziek horen spelen. Dit was voor Ellen en mij ook de laatste plaats die we zaterdag bezocht hebben, aangezien het zo druk was, dat we op geen enkele bus meer konden opstappen. We beslisten om de tour opnieuw te doen, maar dan op een weekdag. Jullie kunnen dus zeker een vervolg verwachten over de noordkust van Taiwan! We hebben dus de bus terug naar Tamsui genomen en daar hebben we nog wat genoten van een ijsje en de zon.

  

North Coast of Taiwan

Saturday we made a trip around the north coast of Taipei. The way to travel is to take the MRT to Tamshui where you can take a special bus that allows you to cover the whole north side of Taiwan. For 100NTD (2,5 euros) you can travel the whole day and use the shuttel buses travelling the coast. We left very early and arrived in Tamsui at 7:45AM to take the 8:10 AM bus.
 

The first stop we made was the White Sand Beach. We got there at 8:40 but it was already extremely hot. Our first look at the beach was seeying Paradise and we couldn't wait to get in the ocean. The sand wasn't as white as described but overall, a very nice location to enjoy some beach and sun. Without hesitation we ran down the stairs, searched for a place to lay our towel, took our clothes off (we already had our swimming gear on) and ran into the water! Unfortunately we weren't allowed to go into the sea passed our waist (for our own safety ofcourse) so it wasn't really swimming... With regret we left the beach at 11 AM to see other things but we'll definitely go back there again to relax and enjoy.

The second stop we made was this wedding piazza, famous for couples to take their wedding pictures. It's absolutely beautiful with the white stone arches and walls. The scenery it beautiful and we took some pictures of our own. After tis small break it was time to take the bus to our third destination..

We got off the bus at this huge cemetery garden, a traditional Taiwanese way of honoring the dead. It's a tourist spot because a famous Taiwanese singer is buried here, they play her song constantly. For the two of us, this is the last place we visited this Saturday. It was just too busy for us, the bus was overly crowded and in combination with the weather and different interests, we just had enough. We decided to do the tour again but during the week when it's less busy. So you can expect to read a follow-up on this story really soon! We ended out day by going back to Tamshui to enjoy the sun and a refreshing ice cream.

Wu Fen Pu night market

Wu Fen Pu

Woensdag zijn we naar Wu Fen Pu night market geweest. Dit is de grootste kledingmarkt in Taipei en is eigenlijk de groothandel voor alle andere kledingwinkels in Taipei. We gingen dus naar de rechtstreekse bron eigenlijk =D Daar aangekomen voelden we ons als twee kleine kindjes in de snoepwinkel. Kleren, schoenen en juwelen overal waar je maar keek.

 

Effectief waren de prijzen nog goedkoper dan de prijzen in andere shops. Shirts kon je al krijgen vanaf een kleine 4 euro. Hetgene wat wel heel anders is hier en wat we absoluut niet gewoon zijn is het feit dat er geen paskamers zijn omdat je de kleren ook niet MAG passen. Ze zijn bang dat de kleren scheuren, vuil worden of ... Je moet dus beslissen op zicht en hopen als je thuis komt dat het mooi is als je het aan hebt. Maar gelukkig, alles wat we gekocht hebben, past heel mooi!

 

 

Wu Fen Pu

Wednesday we went to Wu Fen Pu night market. This is the largest clothingmarket in Taipei and is the wholesale for other clothingshops in Taipei. The direct source =D Once we arrived we felt like 2 children in a candy store. Clothes, shoes and juwelery, everywhere you looked.

 

 

The prices were really cheaper then in other shops. You could buy shirts from 4 euro. The difference here is they don't have changing rooms because you are not allowed to try the clothes on. They are afraid you will tear the clothes, damage them, make them dirty,... So you have to decide on sight and hope, when you get home that they fit you. But fortunate , everything we bought, fits beautiful!

Eerste goede daad!

Velen onder jullie hebben enorm veel interesse getoond in onze reis en waren bereid ons te steunen om hier enkele goede daden te verrichten. Het is dan ook met veel plezier dat we jullie mededelen dat we een eerste manier hebben gevonden om een klein stukje van ons budget te besteden.

Ons team bestaat uit ons tweetjes, Nita, Jana en Sweeney. Nita en wij hebben het geluk relatief dicht in de buurt van het project te wonen. Hierdoor is het maar enkele metrohaltes naar het werk en valt de kost goed mee. Jammer genoeg was het niet mogelijk om allemaal samen in dit appartement te logeren en moest er een gastgezin gevonden worden. Dit was geen gemakkelijke opdracht. Er werd een super gezin gevonden dat bereid was twee studenten te hosten. Er is echter één nadeel, zij wonen in Damshui, een heel eindje van onze werkplaats. De verbinding met de metro is erg goed maar ze zijn een hele tijd onderweg en vooral de kosten vallen erg zwaar. Het kost hun elke werkdag een hele grote hap uit hun budget om naar het werk te komen.

 

Dat wij dicht bij het werk wonen en zij veraf is puur toeval. Het had ons ook kunnen overkomen en het zou financieel ook voor ons een zware dobber geweest zijn. Omdat we van dit project een succes willen maken moeten we samenwerken en moeten onze twee teamgenoten dus ook op het werk geraken. We hebben dus besloten om de transportkosten voor de duur van het project en enkel voor de werkdagen te vergoeden van het geld dat we hebben ingezameld. Hun aanwezigheid zal ervoor zorgen dat we impact kunnen hebben in Wenzhou en de lokale mensen kunnen helpen!

Deze gift was zeer belangrijk voor het project en onze teamgenoten. Sweeney uit Maleisië wou daarom ook iedereen bedanken die een snoephuisje heeft gekocht:

 

"Thank you very much for those who bought the candy from Ellen and Inez.. They decided to use the revenue to sponsor the transportation fee of mine and my roommate (Jana). At first, I refused to accept it because I don't think they should bare this responsibility. However, they tried to convince me by giving me several reasons. They told me that we should help each other since we are teammates and they should wisely use the revenue in helping the project and team members, but not for their personal purposes. Finally, I was convinced. I feel very happy and touching not only because of the sponsorship, but it is because of the willingness of them to help me and consider my situation(staying far away from the working venue). It makes my day better."

 

Our first good deed

Many among you have shown a huge interest in our trip and were willing to support us so we could provide some financial aid to the projects here. We are very happy to announce that we have found a first way to put a smaal portion of this money to good use.

 

Our team consists out of the two of us, Nita, Jana and Sweeney. Nita and the two of us are lucky to be living relatively close to work. It's only a few MRT stops to get to work and the cost is pretty minimal. Unfortunately the apartment wasn't big enough for all of us to stay in so AIESEC tried to find a host family. This wasn't aneasy job but they found a really nice family willing to take in two foreign students. There was/is only one downside; they live in Damshui which is not exactly close to Wenzhou. De connection between the two places is very good but they have to travel for quite some time and especially the financial cost is pretty high. The commute to the project takes an enormous bite out of their budget.

 

That we live close to the project and they so far a way is a mere coincidence. It could just as easily have been us living with that host family and then it would have been a real financial burden for us to come to work. To turn this project into a big success we need to work together and so we need or two teammates to come and join us on site. Because of this we have decided to pay for their transportation fee for the remainder of the project for the days that they have to come to work out of  the money we collected. Their presence will help us to create real impact in Wenzhou and to help the locals.

This gift was immensly important for our project and our teammates. Sweeney from Malaysia wanted to thank everyone who bought a box of candy from us. You can find her thank you note next to her picture!

Het leven zoals het is: 'Een weekend in Taipei'

Zaterdag zijn we naar een evenement geweest van de gemeenschap van Wenzhou. Het evenement was bedoeld om mensen te overtuigen zwerfhonden en -katten te adopteren. Eenmaal aangekomen waren er een 7-tal katten en een 5-tal honden. Ons oog viel meteen op een schattige pup van 5 maanden oud. Super lief en rustig als je hem in je armen hield maar super bang als je hem op de grond zette. We waren meteen verliefd. Met flyers, pennen, brochures en onze paarse jasjes aan gingen we rond in de omringende straten om mensen aan te spreken. De rede dat zwerfhonden momenteel moeilijk een nieuwe thuis vinden is dat recent ontdekt werd dat sommige zwerfhonden hondsdolheid hebben. Door angst blijven Taiwanezen ver uit hun buurt of zijn zelfs agressief ten opzichte van de honden. Dit evenement is bedoeld om de afstand tussen mens en dier wat kleiner te maken. Er waren wel wat geïnteresseerden die zich kwamen inschrijven want voor je een hond of kat mee krijgt, zullen ze eerst kijken of je een goede thuis kan bieden voor het dier.

 

 

Zwemmen

 

Zondag hadden we afgesproken met een hele groep om te gaan zwemmen. We vertrokken rond de middag en kwamen aan om 13u30 aan het zwembad. Na wat zwemmen en zonnen vertrokken we terug rond 16u omdat we een Belgisch feestje hadden, georganiseerd door het Belgische consulaat. Eens in ons appartement aangekomen hebben we ons snel omgekleed en zijn we vertrokken naar Taipei 101. We moesten in het gebouw ertegenover zijn. Het ging door in het Belgian Beer Café, wat nog maar enkele maanden open is. Aangekomen, kregen we de keuze uit Leffe blond of donker, stella of kriek. Helaas was de kriek op... Dus hebben we genoten van een stella en zagen we wat hapjes passeren zoals tomatensoep en Brusselse wafels. Na het feestje hebben we nog wat langs de winkels rond Taipei 101 gewandeld en naar lokale straatartiesten gekeken. Een leuk einde van ons weekend.

Saturday we attended an event of the Wenzhou community. The purpose of the happening was to convince people to adopt a stray cat or dog. Once we'd arrived we were greeted by about 7 cats and 5 dogs and we immediately noticed this cute little 5 month old puppy. It was the cutest thing ever! If you left him on the floor he started shaking like mad because all the people and the noise scared him but if you picked him up he was the loveliest thing I'd ever seen! We fell in love immediately! With some flyers, pens, brochures and our purple jackets we tried to approach people on the street. Currently it's hard to find a home here for the stray dogs since recently somedogs tested positive for rabies. The fear the Taiwanese have of this illness is kepping them far away from dogs or makes them event mistreat the poor animals. This event was set up to change this attitude and to improve the relationship between animal and human once again. Some people seem to be interested and signed up to adopt an animal because before you get to take it home, your background will be checked to see if you can provide the animal with a suiting living environment.

 

 

Swimming

 

On Sunday we met up with the whole group to go swimming in the mountains. We left around lunch and arrived by bus around 13:30. After swimming a bit and enjoying the sun and warm weather we headed home to change to go to the Belgian Party in honor of our new king. We got dressed really fast and left for the ATT 4 fun building opposite Taipei 101. The reception was in the Belgian Beer Café which recently opened. We were immediately offered a drink of Leffe blond or dark, Stella or Kriek. Unfortunately the Kriek was sold out so we driank a glass of stella instead. We also saw some lovely snacks like Belgian wafels and tomato soup but we weren't feeling too hungry. Afte the party we enjoyed a nice walk around the area and shops of Taipei 101 and spend some time watching the local street artists. A nice ending to our weekend! 

 

Voedselrestjes ophalen

We leren elke dag weer iets bij hier in Taiwan. Zo kwamen we recent te weten dat sorteren, recycleren en composteren niet vanzelfsprekend zijn in Taiwan. De meeste mensen zijn er niet mee vertrouwd en het is dus een hele strijd om mensen te motiveren goed te zijn voor het milieu. Dat is nu net wat de NGO waarbij we betrokken zijn doet. Asuka en enkele andere mensen zetten hun iedere dag volledig in om van Taiwan en Wenzhou een betere plaats te maken en een betere leefomgeving te creëren. Wij zijn erg blij daar deel vanuit te mogen maken! Dit was onze bijdrage:

Voorbije donderdag werden we door Asuka opgepikt aan het metrostation. Hij was een beetje te laat omdat hij erg druk bezig was met het verdedigen van de dierenrechten in Wenzhou. Recent is er namelijk een heropleving van hondsdolheid opgedoken en sommige lokale bewoners zijn daarom erg wantrouwig t.o.v. straathonden. Asuka probeert de gemoederen wat te bedaren en ervoor te zorgen dat de dieren gerespecteerd worden. 

Onderweg naar onze bestemming had Asuka weer enorm veel te vertellen en wij hingen zoals altijd aan zijn lippen. Deze keer toonde hij ons een tweedehandswinkeltje. Deze organisatie berust bijna volledig op vrijwilligers die oude meubelen en spulletjes ophalen. Een ander team van vrijwilligers restaureert deze en ze worden verkocht in een klein winkeltje. De winst wordt geïnvesteerd in duurzame ontwikkeling van de landelijke gebieden in Taiwan. De sociale betrokkenheid van de Taiwanezen verbaast ons enorm en we kunnen er nog erg veel van leren. Zo kwamen we voorbij het huis van een arm gezin en we zagen dat de buurtbewoners er eten en de krant hadden achtergelaten. De mensen zorgen hier voor elkaar en het gemeenschapsgevoel is groot!

Aangekomen op ons vertrekpunt werden we opgesplitst in drie teams met in elk team iemand die Chinees sprak. Samen met een kaart en pen kregen we de taak om op zoek te gaan naar winkels, restaurants en koffieshops die bereid zijn om mee te werken aan ons "groene" project. We noteerden elk bedrijfje dat bereid was op een regelmatige basis voedselresten aan ons project te doneren. Onze tocht wierp zijn vruchten af en we waren in staat 40kg per dag aan afval te verzamelen. Hiermee zullen we de komende weken compost kunnen maken voor onze kruidentuin maar ook voor enkele buurtbewoners. Stap 1 van onze missie is in ieder geval al succesvol voltooid.

Collecting food waste

We learn something new everyday here in Taiwan! Recently we found out that sorting the trash, recycling and composting food waste isn't obvious here in Taiwan. Most people aren't familiar with it and so it's an enormous battle to convince the locals to do something for the environment. This is exactly what the NGO we're part of is trying to do. Asuka and some other people give it their all every single day to turn Taiwan and Wenzhou into a better place and more suitable living environment. We are so happy to be part of this movement! So far, this has been our contribution:

Last Thursday Asuka picked us up at the MRT-station. He was a little late because he was very busy with defending the animal rights in Wenzhou. Recently there's been a resurgence of rabies and some locals are very suspicious about any kind of street dog. Asuka is trying to calm the atmosphere down a little and to make sure the animals are respected and not mistreated.

On our way to our destination Asuke told us a bunch of local stories (as he tends to do) and as usual we hung on his every word! This time he showed us this little second hand shop The organization responsible almost fully relies on volunteers who go out to collect old furniture and knicknacks considered to be trash. Another team of volunteers restores them and then they get sold at this little shop they own. The profit is invested in the development of rural areas in Taiwan. The social involvement in Taiwan has surprised us immensly and I think we westerners could learn a lot from this. For example, we came across this little house of a poor family and Asuka told us that the food and newspaper we saw at the front door, was left there by their neighbours to help them out. People take care of each other here and the community feeling is very large.

Arrived at our starting point we split into three groups each containing a Chinese speaking person. With a map and pen in hand we faced the task of searching foodstores, restaurants and coffeeshops to ask about their willingness to cooperate in our "green" project. We noted down every company agreeing to hand us their food waste on a regular basis. Our search was not in vain and we received the contact details to collect about 40kg per day. With this food waste we'll make compost during the following weeks which will be used for our herb garden and the other locals interested. Step 1 of our mission was completed succesfully!

Rice harvest

Rijst oogsten

Gisteren zijn we naar een klein rijstveld geweest. Hier wordt rijst geteeld waarvan de omringende bewoners kunnen eten. De rijst heeft ongeveer 4 tot 6 maanden nodig om te rijpen. Het wordt gezaaid in maart omdat het verschillende temperaturen nodig heeft. Wanneer de stengels beginnen te buigen door het gewicht van de rijst, is het klaar om te oogsten. De stengels worden afgesneden en in bundels gedaan van 15 cm dik.

Op deze foto zien jullie een ijzeren en automatische machine waar de top van de bundels ingehouden worden. In de machine zit een as dat rond draait en hierdoor valt de rijst vanonder in een bak.We mochten allemaal eens proberen om de bundel in de machine te steken. Het was zaak om de bundel goed vast te houden, anders schoot alles in de machine en moest het stil gelegd worden om de stengels er uit te halen. 

De volgende fase was deze manuele en houten machine. De rijstkorrels werden vanboven in de trechter gekiept, het ronde gedeelte werd door middel van een hangel rond gedraaid. Op deze manier werden de rijstkorrels gescheiden van de rest.  

Na deze fase moet de rijst 1 week drogen zodat de rijstkorrel zich kan scheiden van zijn vlies. Het vervolg van dit verhaal kunnen jullie dus volgende week lezen!

Rice harvest

Yesterday we went to a rice field. Here, rice is being harvest so the surrounding locals can eat from it. The rice needs 4 to 6 months to grow. Its planted in March because the rice needs different temperatures. When the rice branches start to bend, the rice is ready to harvest. The brenches are cut down and put in a bunch of 15 cm.

Then the bundels are held down in a iron and automatic machine. Because of a spinning wheel inside the machine, the rice falls into a plastic box. We all had a go with a bunch but it was important to kling on to it because when you let go, the branches go in to the machine and then they have to shut it down to get the branches out.

The next fase was this manual and wooden machine. They put the rice in the funnel and the round part got rotated by hand. In this way, the rice got seperated from the rest. After this fase, de rice needs to dry for 1 week, so the rice can seperate itself from its fleece. So you can read the sequel of this story next week!
